In 1900, German sparkling wine, or Sekt, was highly regarded. During the Imperial era (1871?1918), Sekt was present at every festive occasion, equal to french Champagne, it was served in the very best restaurants and luxury hotels of the Empire. The magnificent villas and châteaux that dominate the Saar Valley landscape, particularly in Saarburg and Serrig, bear witness to the outstanding reputation of the sparkling wines of the Saar. One of the hallmarks of the quality sparkling-wine culture at the time ,was that the base wines came exclusively from the finest slate vineyard locations.They were then allowed to mature in the cellars for many years,naturally fermenting in the bottles according to the classic methods,before being consumed by connoisseurs.At Van Volxem we follow exactly this traditional model with our 1900 Brut, which derives from wonderfully aromatic grapes of the slightly cooler tributaries of the Saar. After the natural first fermentation in wooden casks,its second fermentation in traditional, bulbous Champagne bottles, lasts up to a period of 5 years.These two processes are the reason for its aromatic length and extremely fine perlage. The actual 1900 originates from the great vintage of 2016. Much of the production comes from ungrafted, old vines, many from around the time of 1900, grown on skeleton-rich slate layers. The name ?1900 Brut? refers to these old vines as well as referring back to the style of the Imperial era. We strive to recreate the characterful Sekts of this great era with their seductive ripe fruit flavours, great density, complexity, and silky-smooth texture. We are delighted to revive, once again, an almost forgotten culture in many of the very best restaurants.
